Canada Summer Jobs Position 2019: Graphic Design Intern, Wonder’neath Art Society

Terms: Full-time term position starting June 19, 2019 - August 10, 2019 (30 hours/8 weeks @ $18.00/h)

The Graphic Design Intern will work with the Co-Directors to develop graphic design elements to support the communications plan of an arts organization.  Tasks will include: designing clear engaging graphic communications for print and web, including logo development, marketing/communications brochures, posters/postcards, and other marketing materials; evaluate and update the website; help create consistent signage for programming, and assist with other graphic design requirements as needed.

Wonder’neath is a charitable artist-run organization that encourages and promotes art as a tool for expression, connection and social transformation by bringing professional artists and local residents together in dynamic, creative explorations. Our organization provides affordable studio space for professional artists and craftspeople, and offers regular public studio access. Wonder’neath shares contemporary arts practices through facilitated activities, structured studio support, and dialogue with artists through educational and experiential platforms. Wonder’neath is committed to exploring the role of practicing artists as creative catalysts in the community and developing creative partnerships, programs, and collaborative projects with art and  community organizations.

Graphic Design Intern Qualifications:

  • pursuing a degree in graphic design or with equivalent experience

  • has a portfolio that demonstrates  strong graphic design skills in digital, social and web

  • has own laptop computer and access to design software

  • self starter with strong communication & organizational skills

  • able to set goals and priorities and manage work time well

  • highly creative, innovative and flexible

  • able to work both collaboratively and independently

  • punctual and reliable

 The ideal Graphic Design Candidate is:

  • is curious, kind and passionate about design and able to share your ideas with others

  • a motivated problem solver , detail-oriented and sharply focused  

  • able to  work in a shared studio space in a respectful and cooperative manner

  • someone with  an interest in community arts and engagement

  • able to work flexible hours

Travelling by bicycle and trailer to green spaces throughout HRM, Art Bikers engage children, youth and others in free community art activities at a neighbourhood level.

Wonder’neath is a charitable artist-run organization that encourages and promotes art as a tool for expression, connection and social transformation by bringing professional artists and local residents together in dynamic, creative explorations.

Art Bikers Program Coordinator Qualifications:



    • experience and passion designing and delivering programming in a community arts setting

    • proven team leadership and strong collaboration skills

    • experience with anti-oppression frameworks

    • familiarity and experience in conflict resolution and problem solving

    • experience in scheduling, evaluating, and offering constructive feedback of staff performance

    • experience in designing overall programming schedule and managing logistics

    • excellent written and oral communication skills

    • experience with promotion through social media/websites, postering

    • excellence in program documentation, and record keeping

    • strong visual arts, craft or theatre skills

    • facilitation experience engaging children, youth, newcomers, and seniors across cultures

    • highly creative, innovative and flexible

    • experienced urban cyclist with a hybrid road bike in good working condition and a high level of comfort biking in traffic  and cycling in all weather

    • available for the entire season from May 8th - August 28th

    • able to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings


    • Ideal Art Bikers Program Coordinator Candidate:

    • has strong interest in community arts and engagement with demonstrated experience and has an understanding of the goals of the Art Bikers program

    • has strong organizational skills, prioritizes workplace safety, and is accountable and reliable

    • has ability to lead by example, set positive tone, and direct and collaborate with team members

    • has art teaching or facilitation experience and is able to lead hands-on art making demos and support skill building

    • has an open personality and is interested in meeting people

    • has a playful spirit, abundant energy and creative skills

    • is comfortable working in multiple settings: outdoors in all weather conditions and in a mixed use studio

    • has knowledge of bicycle repair/maintenance

    • speaks a second language

    • has experience working within a budget

    • has research skills
