Fall Studio Days

Bria Miller is settling in at the studio and enjoying time to create alongside Open Studio participants as part of her residency. Keen after school crowd from two local schools: Shambala and St Joseph's A. McKay join her at the felting table.

A special Open House will take place at Wonder'neath (2891 Isleville Street, 2nd Floor) on Sunday, October 1st from 2-4pm. Join Bria as part of Culture Days in celebration of her practice and residency. There will be refreshments and materials for making bracelets and bunting while considering what community means to you. All welcome, although we regret our location is not accessible. If you wish to connect with Bria through skype, or FaceTime because we can't meet your accessibility needs, we will make that happen.

During Open Studio, our artists often work away on their studios. Bethany is loading a kiln in the picture below!

Black Street and Northwood Terrace Neighbourhood Party

Wonder'neath artists Melissa and Heather were invited to help animate the annual Black Street Party so they designed interactive kiosks using reclaimed materials.

The Little Village: Kiosks for the Black Street Party consisted of:

- a Post Office,

- an Exchange Pavilion,

- Gaming Centre

- Who's Your Neighbour? - a booth designed to help get to know your neighbours.

Huge support in designing, building, sourcing materials, and set up by Jessica Winton (artist and society president).

IMG_3332.JPG

Our Post Office kiosk was inspired by former Fuller Terrace resident: artist Alison Creba, and her project called City Mail. An exchange of post cards, letters, and messages to Northwood residents, the intersection repair team, volunteers and neighbours delighted the crowd.

IMG_3336.JPG

The Exchange Pavilion - using Jessica Winton's repurposed half-pyramids, we added shelves to this kiosk and filled it with treasures and trinkets.

IMG_3379.JPG

We heard this was really a great addition to the party that was a highlight for some of the kids!

Questions in the box allowed folks to get to know each other better! Throughout the day questions such as:  what makes you happy?  do you prefer cats or dogs?   were added to the box.

With special thanks to Visual Arts Nova Scotia and the Cultural and Youth Activities Program through The Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, we are so very excited to welcome artist Bria Miller to Wonder'neath!

Studio Update

Open Studio is about to open its doors again for the fall season - thanks to generous support from 4Cs Foundation! We have been busy sorting, cleaning and learning. Today we held a training session to share our respective experiences, ideas, questions, society goals and history. And we had delicious soup!

Artists Renée and Jenny are joined by Merv, former NSCAD technician, to have a look at this sweet little press. Lucky Grammar School gets to have this at their school - not to mention  Renée's passion and talent as an educator!!

We also got to see artist/illustrator Laura Roy on site today! She's working on book illustrations - which we will share soon - and reading up on how the brain works.

Open Studio Summer Days

We've been running Open Studio on Saturdays only during July and August and although we've had beautiful summer weather, we still find our studio busy with artists and makers of all ages. Here are some recent highlights from our public studio sessions.

A mid-week visit by Armbrae Academy artists in Cynthia Lewis's summer session: checking out Lemonade Stand Design and learning about artist Marie Webb's process.

Some days we invent or research really interesting projects to share during Open Studio.  On other days we are rushing to transition the studio from one event to another and we end up looking around for inspiration. Luckily, we share the space with incredibly creative (and weird) folks like the wizards (aka ceramic artists).  Thanks for sharing this awesome sign with us on our string art exploration day!

Catching up on our blog!

It's been ages since we've kept a regular blog, but we do keep a photo archive and will try to add more regularly!  The program continues to inspire and resonate, and our participant records show that every weekend, we have more than 100 visitors during our two drop in sessions! Please send us an email if there is an art medium you are interested in learning about!  We work with a range of talented art facilitators who can share their knowledge of many mediums.

Mulgrave Park: Community Map Project

Starting in July, a teen group from the Phoenix Youth Program in Mulgrave Park came in to work on a mural-sized map of their community.  Together, we made a list of the important sites and details to incorporate, and we began the map by first painting a base layer of latex paint on Tyvek material.

We taped off a projected map of Mulgrave Park and sponged on several shades of greens and blues to add more depth, treating the map almost like a quilt.

Meanwhile, the felting table was buzzing with lively chatter and flowers being felted to add to the garden section of the map.  The felting zone often becomes the site for sharing, storytelling, and lots of laughs.

The big reveal happened when the sponged paint dried and we could remove all of our tape…it was pretty impressive!   The tape also removed some patches of the latex paint underneath, which added to the richness of textures we had going on. With components including a basketball court, buildings, and lettering being made and more painting happening, the MGP community map is looking great!

Open Studio Summer Intern

Hi!  I’m Emma.  I’m new here at Wonder’neath, having recently joined as Open Studio Intern for the summer.  Originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, I’ve just completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing and Minor in Art History at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design here in Halifax.  You can find out more about me and my work here.

Making some jewellery with found objects

My time at Wonder’neath Studios has been full of many new experiences and new people.  Wonder’neath is a vibrant and always changing space.  I was excited to become a part of this place!  Heather and Melissa steer the organization with heaps of passion and a great sense of collaboration.  The openness of Wonder’neath exists at every level here, from the approach to exploring art-making in Open Studio to the supportive culture of the permanent artists.  I was instantly welcomed by all.

Right away, I dove into several projects including brainstorming and sample-making for Open Studio, sorting the many generous donations in the storage room, and co-facilitating a Grade 2 class visit from St. Joseph’s A. McKay School where they made creatures, their habitats, and screen printed flags.  We carried the creatures and habitats over as that week’s Open Studio featured project which sparked a super creative response.  Wow!  A great beginning to the summer.

January 23, 2015 The studio was buzzing with 53 artists of all ages who joined us and typed on old typewriters, felted, tried watercolour painting, made quilts and inspired each other. This was our biggest day since our Open Studio launch so it was a genuine treat to be among so many creative people in our community.
