About the Studio Artist Program

Wonder’neath Art Society’s Studio Artist Program aims to support practicing artists by providing affordable, stable studio space for artists to develop or produce their work, which has been the cornerstone of our organization since 2013. Through the program, Wonder’neath aims to celebrate, encourage and share with the community a wide range of art and craft practices and opportunities for artistic exchange, and to preserve and promote the development of, and excellence, in the visual arts and crafts.

Ground Work: Black Arts Matter

Ground Work, an initiative led by LaMeia Reddick to enhance Wonder’neath’s Studio Artist Program, is exploring modelling Studio Art Practice through an African Nova Scotian perspective; understanding current needs/supports for African Nova Scotian/BIPOC artists in arts programming spaces; space for dialogue, care, learning, creative exploration, mindful meditation in practice; exploring arts education strategies to better understand accessibility and share skills.

The Ground Work: Black Arts Matter initiative will benefit Indigenous Black community members across Nova Scotia with a specific focus on rural communities facing significant isolation and marginalization during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The project aims to identify, connect and build relationships between artists who identify as Indigenous Black or African Nova Scotian across Nova Scotia. The project will have roots in North Preston, Nova Scotia. North Preston is Canada's oldest and largest settlement of indigenous black citizens. This project will benefit Indigenous Black, African Nova Scotians by providing an opportunity for marginalized voices to be shared through art. Ground Work: Black Arts Matters, will centre the experience particularly of children, youth and seniors. This project will ultimately benefit all Nova Scotias as it will become the virtual exhibition and resources developed through the project will teach and inform all Nova Scotians about the rich cultural identities that make up our province. This project will have a significant impact and benefit primarily on children in elementary and secondary school.
