Art Bikers, Community Art Facilitator

Terms: This is a full-time, term contract position, 35 hours weekly @ $23/hr, May 29, 2024 - Aug 24, 2024, 2024 (TBC) (*please see below for eligibility requirements)

Are you curious about exploring creative art programming outdoors this summer? 

Entering its 18th season, Art Bikers seeks several dynamic artist facilitators for its Summer 2024 program. Art Bikers is a training program for artists interested in socially engaged arts and working directly with all ages of community members. Modeling sustainable transportation through bicycle and trailer travel to green spaces throughout Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Art Bikers works in collaboration with community programs, non-profits, and citizens to bring engaging art activities to neighborhoods in Kjipuktuk (Halifax). 

For the second year, Art Bikers will be collaborating with the Ecology Action Centre’s Pop-Up Bike Hub mini for a mobile bike repair and art program that will bring together residents in several neighborhoods/communities to promote cycling, creativity, and community engagement in a way that deepens existing relationships and broadens our collective reach.

Wonder’neath is a charitable artist-run organization and studio facility that encourages and promotes art as a tool for expression, connection, and social transformation by bringing professional artists and local residents together in dynamic, creative explorations.

Art Biker Qualifications:

  • Highly creative, innovative, and flexible with strong visual arts and craft skills

  • Has facilitation experience with children/youth/folks across cultures and enjoys engaging with people

  • Strong collaboration and problem-solving skills as part of a team

  • Confident and experienced urban cyclist in good physical condition

  • Available for the entire season

  • Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, within a 5-day work week

  • Punctual and reliable

  • Comfortable working in multiple settings: outdoors in all weather conditions and a mixed-use studio 

The Art Biker role includes: 

  • Initiating and facilitating creative community art practices in public parks and other outdoor locations within Halifax Regional Municipality

  • Designing and animating collaborative art projects that encourage creativity and self-expression

  • Traveling to neighborhoods and transporting art materials by bicycle and trailer, and other sustainable transportation

  • Sharing art knowledge and skills with participants by offering hands-on examples, skill-building directions, and working collaboratively

  • Reflecting on and recording activities in daily and weekly debriefs and incorporating these reflections into how the work is carried out

Art Bikers are responsible: 

  • To participate as an active and collaborative team member, and contribute to the healthy functioning of the team,

  • To maintain safe practices, with awareness of community protocols for land stewardship 

  • To become familiar with Wonder’neath, its policies, programming, and community partners

  • To use the studio facility respectfully and cooperatively, maintain its cleanliness, security, and organization

  • To maintain and use the program bike trailers, tools, and materials responsibility

  • To honor the time commitment of the job for the duration of the program 

The Ideal Art Biker Candidate:

  • Has an interest in community-engaged art practices

  • Has their own bicycle in excellent working order and has knowledge of bicycle repair/maintenance 

  • Bilingualism is an asset

Eligibility Requirements:

These positions are supported through the Canada Summer Jobs program and NS Student SKILLS:

* 2 positions are funded by Canada Summer Jobs and requires the applicant to be between 15 - 30 years of age at the start of employment; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial legislation and regulations.

* 1 position is NS Skills requires the applicant who is either: entering full-time post-secondary studies in the fall following the summer work term or continuing full-time post-secondary studies following the summer work term SKILL recognizes post-secondary programs designated by Employment and Social Development Canada. A list of these can be found at the following website. The student must be a permanent resident of the province or live in Nova Scotia for at least six months prior to the work term.
