Art Bikers Community Art Facilitator

(Visual Arts Artist)

May 29th - Aug 29th, 2025 (35 hours/week @ $24.00/hr).


This position is for a mobile community art facilitator through Wonder’neath Art Society. The successful candidate will work as a member of the Art Biker team, delivering art programming to the public by bicycle and other sustainable transportation in outdoor spaces around greater Kjipuktuk/ Halifax. Wonder'neath Art Society is a visual arts organization and studio facility that encourages and promotes art as a tool for expression, connection and social transformation through community programming and partnerships.


Are you curious about exploring creative art programming outdoors this summer? 

Entering its 19th season, Art Bikers, seeks several dynamic artist facilitators for its Summer 2025 program. Art Bikers is a training program for artists interested in socially engaged arts and working directly with community members of all ages. Modelling sustainable transportation through bicycle and trailer travel to green spaces throughout Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Art Bikers works in collaboration with community programs, non-profits, and citizens to bring engaging art activities to neighbourhoods in Kjipuktuk (Halifax). 

Wonder’neath is a charitable artist-run organization and studio facility that encourages and promotes art as a tool for expression, connection and social transformation by bringing professional artists and local residents together in dynamic, creative explorations.


Art Biker Qualifications:

  • Highly creative, innovative and flexible with strong visual arts and craft skills

  • Has facilitation experience with children/youth/folks across cultures and enjoys engaging with people

  • Strong collaboration and problem-solving skills as part of a team

  • Confident and experienced urban cyclist in good physical condition

  • Available for the entire season

  • Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, within a 5-day work week

  • Punctual and reliable

  • Comfortable working in multiple settings: outdoors in all weather conditions and a mixed-use studio 


Art Bikers are responsible: 

  • To participate as an active and collaborative team member and contribute to the healthy functioning of the team,

  • To maintain safe practices, with awareness of community protocols for land stewardship 

  • To become familiar with Wonder’neath, its policies, programming, and community partners

  • To use the studio facility respectfully and cooperatively, maintain its cleanliness, security and organization, and

  • To maintain and use the program's bike trailers, tools, and materials responsibly

  • To honour the time commitment of the job for the duration of the program 

 

The Art Bikers duties are:

  • To initiate and facilitate creative community art activities in public parks and other outdoor public locations within Halifax Regional Municipality

  • To design and animate collaborative art projects that encourage creativity and self-expression

  • To travel to neighbourhoods and transport art materials by bicycle and trailer, and other means of sustainable transportation

  • To share art knowledge and skills with participants by offering hands-on examples, skill-building directions, and working collaboratively

  • To reflect on and record activities in daily and weekly debriefs, and incorporate these reflections into how the work is carried out

This position requires riding a bicycle daily in an urban setting with an appropriate level of physical fitness and comfort on the road for safety. 

The Ideal Art Biker Candidate:

  • Has an interest in community-engaged art practices

  • Has their own bicycle in excellent working order and has knowledge of bicycle repair/maintenance 

  • Bilingualism is an asset

Eligibility Requirements:

These positions are supported through the Canada Summer Jobs program and NS Student SKILLS:

* 2 positions are funded by Canada Summer Jobs and requires the applicant to be between 15 - 30 years of age at the start of employment; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial legislation and regulations.

Summer Art Programming and Outreach Intern

Terms: June 24, 2025 - August 24, 2025 (9 weeks) $24/hour, 30 hours per week, located in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, NS. Generally, hours will be Tuesday through Saturday and may include evenings.

Wonder'neath Art Society is a visual arts organization and studio facility that encourages and promotes art as a tool for expression, connection and social transformation through community programming and partnerships. The Summer Art Programming Intern will support the delivery of art programming and outreach to engage a variety of participants. The Summer Art Programming Intern should have art making and art facilitation experience, and a strong interest in the role of community-engaged arts.

Under the supervision of the Artistic and Executive Director, duties will include collaborating in: 

  • Project planning and scheduling for summer art initiatives and outreach events, including support for the Open Studio program, the Sketchbook Project,  and the Summer Open House

  • Researching and developing project ideas, including creating samples and directions 

  • Animating and facilitating art activities

  • Liaising with community members and community organizations 

  • Developing posters and communicating initiatives through a variety of methods, including social media

  • Contributing to overall studio organization.

  • Documenting events/projects/programs, collecting feedback from participants, and participating in program evaluation.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Working as part of a team to create an environment that is welcoming to a broad range of participants

  • Becoming familiar with the Wonder’neath community and its ongoing programming

  • Learning and implementing safe studio practices

  • Monitoring the success of projects and identifying improvements

  • Fostering opportunities for sharing, exchange of ideas/resources and expertise within our studio setting

Terms: Full-time term position starting the week of 2024-10-01 to 2025-03-29 (26 weeks), 30 hours/week @$23.50/hr) located in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, NS.

ABOUT WONDER’NEATH: 

Wonder’neath Art Society is a vibrant arts center and charitable artist-led organization based in Kjipuktuk (Halifax) that offers community-engaged art programming, workshops, training/mentorship, and specialized, accessible visual arts studios. Our vision is a neighbourhood deeply connected through the arts – although our work extends well beyond peninsular Halifax. We believe in the transformative powers of art for individuals and communities, as a tool for expression, connection, and social transformation. Wonder’neath works to shift the perception of who can be involved in the arts, supporting artistic exploration at all levels of experience, with a focus on those facing barriers to accessing artistic programming. ABOUT THE position:

The Art Programming and Outreach Intern will help animate programs and engage participants, including children, youth, seniors, newcomers, practicing artists, and community partners. The Programming and Outreach Intern will support the Co-Artistic and Executive Directors in the day-to-day operations of a charitable arts organization located within a dynamic arts facility. Within this position, the intern will help manage community arts programming; develop arts education curricula; support organizational outreach; liaise with on-site and visiting artists; and expand strategic partnerships in the arts and nonprofit sectors. The Programming and Outreach Intern should have leadership experience, art-making and facilitation skills, and an interest in the role of socially engaged arts. We are looking for a candidate who meets the following qualification requirements:

  • Highly creative and innovative

  • Dynamic visual art/craft skills

  • Reliable, flexible, adaptable and patient

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Social media and communication skills

  • Art facilitation experience 

  • Able to work both collaboratively and independently

This position is supported through Young Canada Works -- Career Focus Internships. An individual may be eligible for an internship if they meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-

Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);

are legally entitled to work in Canada;

  • are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;

  • are registered in the YCW online candidate inventory;

  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;

  • will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;

  • are unemployed or underemployed;

  • are a college or university graduate; and

  • are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program.

  • Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.

Qualifications & Responsibilities

In collaboration with Co-Artistic and Executive Directors, the Intern will:

  • Facilitate community engaged programming, including project planning, scheduling, communications, outreach, and partner liaison work.

  • Support the development of fall/winter initiatives, and work with the Directors to plan artistic programming through to the Summer 2024.

  • Research and develop project ideas for Wonder’neath programming, including collaborative art projects that encourage creativity and self-expression.

  • Liaise with community members and community organizations.

  • Document events/projects/programs, collect feedback from participants, and participate in program evaluation.

  • Design posters and develop communication initiatives through a variety of methods including social media.

  • Contribute to overall facility organization.

  • Contribute to writing of project grant applications, and reports.
